Our topic for Summer 1

Who's Worthy? Icons of History

We will start this term with a history topic called ‘Icons of History – Who’s Worthy?’ We will be exploring who we believe is worthy of a place on the back of a banknote. This will include researching and exploring the achievements of different historical figures. Making inferences about historical figures from sources and describing the legacies of historically significant people.

In science, we will be looking at ‘Health and Circulation’. Here we will explore how to keep ourselves healthy as well as looking closely at the heart and circulation of blood within the body. We will explore if there is a relationship between our heart rate and exercise as well as looking at if there is a link between an animal's size and its heart rate.

In D&T we will be exploring bridges where we will look at different types of bridge types before making our own out of wood. In art, we will creating our own sculpture installations.

Our topic for Spring 1

Who Let the Gods Out?

We will start this term with a history topic called ‘Who Let the Gods Out?’ In this topic we will be exploring the features of Ancient Greece, identifying the key periods in the ancient Greek civilisation as well as making inferences about Greek gods. We will compare Athens and Sparta and understand the different types of democracy. We will explain what philosophy is, identifying the achievements of the ancient Greek philosophers as well as the ancient Greeks’ legacies and their impact.

In science, we will be looking at life cycles and reproduction. We will be exploring the life cycles of mammals, birds, plants, amphibians and insects. We will also be exploring sexual and asexual reproduction in plants.

After half term, we will switch to a geography topic where we will be exploring ‘Secrets of the Deep – Ocean Odessey’. In this topic, we will describe how the ocean is used for human activity and explain how the ocean helps to regulate the Earth’s climate and temperature.

We will identify the Great Barrier Reef as part of Australia and describe the benefits of the Great Barrier reef. We will also describe how humans impact the oceans and the consequences of this and explain some actions that can be taken to help support healthy oceans.

In science, we will explore light and reflection. In this, we will compare sources of light and explain how the eye is protected from light. We will describe how light travels and how we see luminous and non-luminous objects. We will also recall factors that affect the size of a shadow and describe how the distance between an object and the surface its shadow is cast on affects the size of the shadow and recall what happens to light when it reaches a smooth mirror surface. We will identify the incoming and reflected rays and describe the relationship between their angles and use mirrors to make a working periscope and explain how a periscope works using ray diagrams.

Our topic in Autumn 1 is

We will start this term with a history topic called ‘Who lived in a village like this?’ We will be exploring local histories from the Victorian to the inter-war period. We will explore census records and make inferences about people from the past. This will enable us to create questions linked to Victorian working conditions as well as using a range of primary and secondary sources to help develop our understanding.

In science, ‘mixtures and separation’, we will be exploring different types of mixtures and looking at different ways of separation. We will also explore whether temperature as an impact on the rate a substance dissolves.

In D&T we will be investigating gears and pulleys, we will be making and designing gear and pulley systems and exploring their uses.

In art, we will be developing our painting skills by creating interesting portrait drawings using words, experimenting with materials and techniques, and constructing self-portraits that represent aspects of themselves.
