Curriculum

The staff at Bradfield keep up to date with new ideas and we regularly evaluate our approach to the curriculum. Our children follow a skills based curriculum, which enables us to ensure coverage of the statutory programmes of study in all areas of the National Curriculum, whilst also developing important key skills for learning. We review school curriculum policy documents in line with our School Development Plan. We also plan our work around ‘themes’ as we believe that our children learn best when they are motivated and can see a link between the activities they are doing.

The teaching staff continually assess each child’s work through observation, notes, records and more formal assessment, such as statutory tests.

Each child has individual targets in Literacy and Numeracy. All reception age children are assessed throughout their first year in school using the ‘Early Years Foundation Stage Profile’. At the end of Year 2 and Year 6, all children are formally assessed in line with statutory requirements, using National Curriculum tests, or SATs. These results are reported to parents and published annually. We also use ‘optional SATs’ in Years 3, 4 and 5. Parents are invited to a SATs information evening each year, usually in the Spring Term.

We teach separate elements of the curriculum through class themes (called 'Learning Journeys') and individual subjects, but the main emphasis is on numeracy, literacy, science and ICT. The National Curriculum consists of ten subjects along with Religious Education.

Core subjects: English, Mathematics, Science, ICT, RE

Foundation subjects: History, Art, Geography, Music, Physical Education, Design Technology , Personal, Social and Health Education
